Hormone Replacement Doctor Houston
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is the replacement of estrogen and progesterone for the management of symptoms after menopause. HRT can increase the risk of breast cancer, heart disease, stroke and possibly dementia. A patient should carefully consider the risks and benefits before starting HRT, and doses should be adjusted and assessed regularly for the management of symptoms. Use of "bioidentical" hormones is not recommended as they have not been proven to be safer or more effective than the available FDA approved preparations.
More recently, men have sought hormone replacement for treatment of testosterone deficiency or hypogonadism from doctors. Testosterone deficiency is associated with the aging process, diabetes, acute and chronic illness and certain medications. Properly diagnosing testosterone deficiency before treatment is essential because supplements may prevent the body from making any testosterone naturally, making them very difficult to stop. Like any medication, risks of testosterone replacement should be considered carefully including growth of prostate cancers, worsening sleep apnea, increased blood counts, infertility, and liver disease.
Houston endocrinologist, Dr. Anu Davis, is interested in helping her patients find the hormone replacement therapy that will allow them to safely and effectively achieve their goals.
