Thyroid Disease Doctor Houston

The thyroid is a gland located in the base of the neck that helps to regulate the body's use of energy. Thyroid diseases include disorders of thyroid function, hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, and disorders of thyroid structure, thyroid nodules and thyroid goiter (enlarged thyroid): these disorders can overlap and patients are often diagnosed with more than one thyroid condition. Thyroid diseases are very common and occur more frequently in women. Endocrinologists specialize in the management of hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), thyroid nodules, and thyroid cancers.

Both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can cause symptoms and lead to complications including cholesterol abnormalities, weight management issues, osteoporosis, and abnormal heart rhythms.

Thyroid nodules are very common especially in patients over fifty; and up to 14% of these can be thyroid cancer. Patients with thyroid nodules require further evaluation, usually with thyroid ultrasound, biopsy, and monitoring.

Thyroid hormones and treatments come in many preparations- including some available over the counter and in "health foods"- patients must be aware of the risks associated with these medications and thyroid hormone levels should be monitored closely during treatment.

River Oaks Doctors Group can provide patients in Houston, Texas with expertise in managing thyroid challenges.
